Then they put those down in notes and put them on a computer, and we’re assigning those different tips so that we can go out and talk to these individuals and investigate these.”

But even before the phone line was up and running they got a hot tip – in fact it felt scorching hot.
Late Sunday night, just a day after the murder, two 19-year-olds from Mandan named Reggie Bunnell and Justin Haider had walked into the Bismarck Police Department with a story that demanded attention.
They explained that in the early hours of Sunday morning, they had been just aimlessly driving around central Bismarck when a Police car sped past them, lights blazing. Moments later, a second squad car followed. Curious and a little bit bored, the friends decided to see where the action was headed.
The patrol cars led them north up State Street past the capital building, over the interstate, beyond Kmart, right on East Century and eventually to the House of Bottles liquor store at the intersection with 19th Street.
