Russell was last seen July 12, 2002, Grand Forks, ND

In July 2002, 19-year-old Russell Turcotte set out to return home to Montana after attending the Rainbow Gathering in Michigan. On July 12, he was last seen at the Simonson truck stop in Grand Forks, North Dakota, wearing a tie-dyed Grateful Dead T-shirt, baggy pants, skater shoes, and carrying a red-framed backpack, sleeping bag, and folding chair.

Four months later, Russell’s partially decomposed body was discovered in a shelterbelt near Devils Lake, North Dakota, more than 100 miles from where he was last seen. He had been beaten to death and left just off a rural highway, and more than 20 years later, the murder of Russell Turcotte remains unsolved despite his family’s continued efforts to find justice.
