Episode 2

Sgt Bob Haas of Bismarck PD got a call around 3am.

I remember getting a phone call around 3 or maybe closer to 3:11 in the morning. There had been a homicide and robbery at the House of Bottles on East Century Avenue …”

” … And basically he took us back to the office area where we could look in and we could see that there was indeed a deceased male sitting in a chair in front of a desk and it was obvious that he was deceased. He was kind of slouched back in the chair and his head was tilted all the way back and his hands were down by his sides.

Travis Bitz sat alone in the small room at Bismarck Police Station. A pen rested in his hand, hovering over a mostly blank sheet of paper. At the top of the document were the words: City of Bismarck, Department of Police. Below that, in bold, all caps, and underlined: CONTINUATION OF STATEMENT.

He stared at the empty page. How does one put everything into words? Everything that had happened in the last two hours. One moment he was kicking back with his brother and some friends, enjoying some “down time” after a long work day, and then his good friend Anne Thompson knocked on his door and said, ‘Have you seen Robbie?’

And now? And now this.

“So, Detective McDonald and I knocked on upwards of 60, perhaps 70 doors over the course of a couple of different days.”

“And there we learned that a man named Steve Kraft, and Russell, had been at the House of Bottles to get some beer. And when they returned, they were with a guy named Shawn, and they had all been there shooting the breeze with Robbie. “
